Ceccanti takes delivery of first Grove GHC220 in North America
- New 220 USt telescoping crawler crane is the highest-capacity model in its range, and it’s designed to enhance pick-and-carry capabilities on demanding jobsites.
- The crane will support major infrastructure projects in Washington State, including the construction of the West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage facility.
Construction company Ceccanti has taken delivery of the first Grove GHC220 in North America. Based in Tacoma, Washington, Ceccanti selected the 220 USt telescoping crawler crane for its combination of high lifting capacity, fast setup, and strong mobility. Its quick assembly and pick-and-carry capabilities make it a versatile solution for congested, complex projects.
The new crane was supplied by Western Pacific Crane & Equipment, a Manitowoc distributor serving the Pacific Coast from San Diego to Alaska and Guam. Its strong on-site support and parts availability contribute to timely service response and efficient fleet maintenance. Together, the Western Pacific and Grove product support teams assisted Ceccanti through the commissioning process, providing a comprehensive introduction to the crane’s features and technologies to maximize efficiency and uptime.
Supporting infrastructure work
The GHC220 is currently working on the Gravelly-Thorne Connector project — a 1.3-mile-long, 14-foot-wide shared-use path along Interstate 5 between Tillicum and Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest in Lakewood, Washington.
Following completion of that work, the GHC220 will be deployed on the project that initially drove the purchase decision: the construction of a 1.25-million-gallon underground storage tank in Seattle. The West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage facility will hold stormwater and wastewater that currently overflow into the Duwamish River and redirect it to a treatment plant. The job involves lifting loads of 15 USt and more, including gang forms of up to 36 ft-tall, and flying them between positions — at times requiring the crane to walk under load to reach the new positions.
“We purchased this GHC220 with the storage tank project in mind, as it is a perfect fit for this application,” said Jon VanderGriend, vice president and chief estimator at Ceccanti. "It’s a busy jobsite, which makes the GHC220’s ease of assembly, combined with its lift-and-carry capability, the ideal choice for reaching every spot on the jobsite.”
Grove’s largest telescoping crawler crane
The GHC220 delivers heavy-duty lifting power and exceptional reach. It introduces new features, including an additional 90% pinning location on the boom sections for increased capacity and versatility during setup. When configured with the 71.5 ft manual or hydraulic swingaway extension, it reaches a maximum tip height of 265.7 ft.
With out-of-level load charts, the crane can pick-and-carry loads at 100 percent of its load chart on inclinations of up to 4°, while maintaining full 360° swing capability. The GHC220 can be transported to a job site in six to seven loads and offers quick self-assembly.
“We believe our future is moving toward machines like the GHCs, which can offer high capacity while remaining quick to assemble and deploy on the jobsite,” VanderGriend explained. “We are very excited about this machine. It combines the efficiency and lift ability of a rough terrain with the capabilities of a crawler crane.”
The new GHC220 is the eighth Manitowoc crane in Ceccanti’s fleet. This growing fleet is supported not only by parts and service from Western Pacific Crane & Equipment, but also by Manitowoc's comprehensive suite of aftermarket solutions, including training and digital tools.
