How smarter mobile crane maintenance keeps jobsites moving

  • Grove offers a range of products that deliver tangible efficiency benefits around owning and operating cranes.
  • They bring greater efficiency to issues such as boom lubrication, hydraulic pressure, and wire rope function, representing a significant opportunity for customers to improve crane uptime.

Today’s fleet owners need predictability just as much as they need performance, which is why regular maintenance is a fundamental part of modern fleet management. However, implementing the right process is only part of the answer. Equally important is ensuring technicians have the right tools, so maintenance stays consistent across crews, projects, and cranes.

Addressing inconsistent boom performance

Poor lubrication is a common cause in declining boom performance. Telescopic sections operate under high loads and friction, so improper lubrication increases resistance and causes uneven movement. If it goes unmanaged, it leads to ‘boom slip’ and accelerated wear in pads and sections. For the operator, that translates to reduced control, slower operation, and, in the worst cases, an inability to telescope.

For technicians, the challenges of boom lubrication include ensuring even distribution and consistency, as well as reaching hard-to-access areas. To address this, Grove offers two specialized products: the Boom Grease Spray Set and the Boom Lubrication Kit.

With the Boom Grease Spray Set, a fine mist of high-density grease is delivered via an optimized pressure system that ensures the correct balance of grease and air. For the Boom Lubrication Kit, there’s a pneumatic pump paired with a variable-pressure spray gun that ensures even distribution. There’s also a long-reach spray lance to ensure full boom access, even on the inside via the TWIN-LOCK™ pinning holes. Both the Boom Grease Spray and Boom Lubrication Kit include Manitowoc-approved high-density grease that provides corrosion and wear protection while preventing boom slip.

Maintain hydraulic pressure to maintain performance

The hydraulic system of a mobile crane relies on precise pressure levels to deliver the correct lifting force and ensure the smooth extension and retraction of the boom. If reduced pressure goes unchecked, it becomes harder for the operator to maintain control of the load, leading to slower or erratic boom movements, or even reduced lift capacity. But here’s the rub: hydraulic performance can’t be judged by ‘feel’: it must be measured.

The DIN Hydraulic Pressure Test Kit from Grove offers a simple solution, enabling fast and accurate hydraulic pressure readings for cranes on both low- and high-pressure lifting cycles. It’s an all-in-one kit that’s perfect for service trucks and delivering simple on-site diagnoses. With the DIN Hydraulic Pressure Test Kit, technicians can identify pressure differences early, resolving issues before they impact performance – or stop the crane entirely.

Wire rope: keep it clean

Cranes work in dirty, dusty, high-stress environments, and the use of a wire rope causes specific issues. Dirt and debris can become trapped between the rope strands, accelerating wear and corrosion. If it goes unmanaged, it can reduce the rope's flexibility and increase the risk of fatigue and failure. Ultimately, for owners, that can mean more frequent inspections and rope replacements.

Grove’s Wire Rope Cleaner has been developed to remove dirt before it causes damage and to reapply lubricant. Regular cleaning and lubrication will extend the rope's lifespan, and, as with the other Grove maintenance products, it uses rope-specific grease to prevent degradation or adverse chemical reactions. For crane owners, a clean, properly lubricated rope ensures greater reliability for every lift.

Manitowoc introduced the Wire Rope Cleaner in 2025, and has now updated it for 2026. The product redesign means it can now accommodate ropes from 12 mm to 38 mm (0.5 in to 1.5 in) diameter on any crane brand, with any rope lay. That means greater versatility for customers and the opportunity to simplify rope maintenance across the fleet.

Uptime is all in the details

Bringing greater efficiency to issues like boom lubrication, hydraulic pressure, and clean wire rope represents a significant opportunity for customers to improve crane uptime. Manitowoc is committed to delivering industry-leading crane performance throughout the machine lifecycle. Maintenance products such as the Boom Grease Spray Set, Boom Lubrication Kit, DIN Hydraulic Pressure Test Kit, and Wire Rope Cleaner help ensure that.

The products are portable, jobsite-ready, and technician-tested, so critical maintenance decisions can be made faster, more easily, and more precisely. As projects grow and timelines tighten, crane uptime will increasingly be defined by small, consistent maintenance tasks performed every day – with the right tools.
