Major Parts Refresh Gives Saudi Crane Services’ Grove Fleet a Second Life

  • A comprehensive parts program has revitalized all 28 Grove cranes in the fleet of Saudi Crane Services (SCS).
  • Some models date back to 1990, yet Manitowoc’s aftersales team supplied 100% genuine OEM components to ensure long-term reliability.
  • The Grove cranes have continued to perform with exceptional dependability in Saudi Arabia’s demanding desert conditions.

Saudi Crane Services (SCS) has completed a full-scale parts refresh for its entire fleet of 28 Grove cranes, breathing new life into machines that have served the company for decades. With 100% OEM parts supplied through Manitowoc’s aftersales support team, the rejuvenated cranes are now ready for a new chapter of reliable, efficient operation across Saudi Arabia’s toughest job sites.
Based in Jeddah, SCS placed a major order covering dozens of components for each crane in its predominantly Grove rough-terrain fleet, along with its GMK4080 all-terrain crane. The fleet’s newest units are nine RT765E-2 cranes, manufactured in 2011–2012, while the oldest—an RT522—dates back to 1990. The lineup also includes eight RT760E cranes, four RT890E cranes, four RT880E cranes, and one RT9130E crane.
Undertaking this major refurbishment program aligns perfectly with SCS’s philosophy of maximizing return on invested capital and extending asset life.
“We typically operate our Grove cranes for around 15 to 20 years before considering resale or trade-in, depending on condition and workload,” explained Richard Gandar, General Manager of Saudi Crane Services. “Because genuine spare parts remain readily available for all our Grove models, a full parts refresh made strong financial sense.”

The extensive upgrade program included a wide range of new components—hydraulic systems, control systems, structural elements, booms, air-conditioning units, and cab upgrades. Each crane took approximately five to ten weeks to complete, depending on the scope of work.
“This initiative has significantly extended our cranes’ operational lifespan while improving lifting precision, reducing downtime, and enhancing fuel efficiency,” Gandar continued. “Our operators have always praised the comfort, control, and robust performance of the Grove cranes, and these upgrades have made them even better.”
Since its establishment in 2007, Saudi Crane Services has relied on Grove rough-terrain cranes for their proven durability and performance in the Kingdom’s harsh desert environment. Their strong lifting capacity, mobility, and reliability make them ideal for applications in construction, oil and gas, and industrial maintenance—covering tasks such as machinery installation, structural erection, and module lifting across the region.
SCS also benefits from dependable aftersales service and parts support from local Manitowoc dealer Kanoo Machinery. The two companies continue to strengthen their partnership through ongoing collaboration, including regular operator and maintenance training programs.
“This project demonstrates how proper parts support and planned maintenance can extend equipment life far beyond expectations,” Gandar concluded. “Our Grove cranes are now ready to deliver many more years of safe, efficient lifting performance.”
