Manitowoc scoops “Tower Crane Assembly of the Year” award at JDL Expo 2020

  • Manitowoc won best tower crane assembly at the JDL Expo tower crane awards in Beaune, September 10, for the Potain MDT 319 working on the DUO Towers in Paris.
  • The crane assembly and three telescoping operations presented a challenge for the Manitowoc Crane Care technicians, who overcame the technical difficulties thanks to their skill and professionalism.
  • Potain dealer UPERIO also won best jobsite for its work on the Notre Dame restoration project in Paris, where an MDT 809 is helping to rebuild the iconic cathedral.

At the JDL Expo in Beaune on September 10, Manitowoc scooped a prize from the tower crane awards in the “Tower Crane Assembly of the Year” category. Manitowoc won the award for the installation of a Potain MDT 319 top slewing crane on the DUO Towers jobsite in Paris.

Designed by Atelier Jean Nouvel for Ivanhoé Cambridge and constructed by Bateg, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction France, the project consists of two asymmetrical and unaligned towers of 180 m and 122 m in height. Due for completion in 2021, the development will reshape the skyline of the area, which has been undergoing major renewal over the last 20 years.

The installation of the Potain topless MDT 319 inside the elevator shaft of the telescoping building, along with the three hoisting operations, presented a considerable technical challenge for the Manitowoc Crane Care team. Inside the elevator shaft, the crane could only rest on the frames installed by the Manitowoc Crane Care technicians, whose support was also required evenings and weekends. Careful coordination was needed for its telescoping operations.

Potain power

The Manitowoc Crane Care technician in charge of the project was Nicolas Coelho from the Saint Ouen branch in Paris. In carrying out these high-tech operations to hoist the 111 t of Potain crane above the void, Coelho benefitted from all the expertise and professionalism of the Manitowoc Crane Care team, his assembly partners, and the studies carried out by Potain Lift Solutions.

Coelho collected the award on behalf of the French Manitowoc Crane Care team. Through the award, Potain’s dedicated technicians and experts across the world are also acknowledged.

In addition, the award for “Jobsite of the Year” was presented to Potain distributor and rental partner UPERIO for the Notre Dame restoration project in France, where an MDT 809, under the authority of the French Ministry for Culture, is working to rebuild the iconic cathedral. No other crane than the MDT 809 could match up to the task. From the top of its 74 m under hook and 80 m jib, it symbolizes perfectly how the latest lifting technologies can help rescue our architectural heritage.

These two awards give credit to Manitowoc’s Potain brand for its excellence as a leading quality tower crane manufacturer, as well as the customer service expertise from the Lift Solutions and Crane Care teams.
