Sarens deploys new Grove rough-terrain cranes on INEOS Project ONE in Belgium
- Four Grove GRT8100-1 cranes and one Grove GRT780 support a major industrial construction project in Antwerp, Belgium.
- All the cranes were manufactured at Manitowoc’s Niella Tanaro factory in Italy.
- Manitowoc is providing full parts, service, and maintenance support to the cranes from its Breda facility in The Netherlands.
Sarens has received a series of new Grove rough-terrain cranes for the company’s global fleet. From this latest order, the company has sent four 100 t capacity Grove GRT8100-1 models and an 80 t capacity Grove GRT780 to the construction of INEOS Project ONE in Antwerp, Belgium, one of Europe’s most significant petrochemical investment projects.
All the units were manufactured at Manitowoc’s factory in Niella Tanaro, Italy, before being shipped to Sarens. Manitowoc is providing comprehensive customer support to the cranes, including parts, service, and maintenance, via its local service teams and global customer support operations.
Project ONE, where most of the cranes are based, is centered on the construction of an ultra-modern ethane cracker. The facility will convert ethane gas into ethylene while using hydrogen generated during the cracking process as a lower-carbon fuel for the furnaces.
The cracker has been designed using modular construction methods, with sections built offsite and transported to Antwerp by ship. Some modules weigh up to 6,000 t and measure up to 50 m long, 40 m wide, and 60 m high. The wider development also includes storage tanks, pumping systems, extensive pipe networks, electrical distribution systems, pipe racks, cable routes, roads, underground systems, and site infrastructure.
Sarens, a global specialist in heavy lifting and engineered transport, is responsible for the project’s transport and lifting operations, including road and sea transport, modular assembly, and precision installations. The company’s scope also includes planning, coordinating, and executing all lifting and transport activities.
The Grove GRT8100-1 has a 47 m main boom and bi-fold swingaway jib that extends from 10.1 m to 17.1 m. The crane offers long reach, while the operator cab tilts to 20° to improve operator comfort and visibility. There are also four onboard cameras for enhanced views of the crane, hoist drum, and load. The Grove GRT780 has a boom and jib offering similar to the GRT8100-1 and is a versatile rough-terrain crane that can travel with loads of up to 15.2 t on the hook, enabling more efficient lifting and movement.
Both cranes have Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS), for a familiar and intuitive operating environment for operators. Sarens added the MAXbase™ variable outrigger positioning system, enabling asymmetrical outrigger configurations while optimizing lifting operations at the front and rear of the crane.
The company also opted for Grove CONNECT™, Manitowoc’s telematics platform that enables remote diagnostics, maintenance planning, and operational monitoring. The system helps service teams quickly identify and resolve issues, supporting maximum uptime on demanding projects such as Project ONE.
“We sincerely thank Team Sarens for their continued trust in Grove technology and wish them every success on the INEOS Project ONE. With support from our teams in Italy and the Netherlands, we are proud to provide the equipment, service, and technical expertise needed to keep these cranes performing efficiently throughout the project,” said Rolf Klooster, regional director for Belgium and The Netherlands at Manitowoc.
