Stirnimann deploys new Potain Hup M 28-22 for Swiss schoolhouse renovation project

  • Stirnimann’s new Potain Hup M 28-22 (80 km/h) self-erecting crane has been hired out to building contractor Schulthess Holzbau AG for the conversion and renovation of an old schoolhouse in Reisiswil in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.
  • The strong load curve, compact transport dimensions and easy assembly are ideal for this project, where both space and budget are tight.

On June 25, longstanding Swiss Manitowoc dealer Stirnimann added a new Potain Hup M 28-22 (80 km/h) to its fleet of rental cranes. Shortly afterwards, the self-erecting crane with 2.2 t maximum capacity and 28 m jib left the Stirnimann premises in Olten for its first job in rural Reisiswil, in the canton of Bern.

Building contractor Schulthess Holzbau AG hired the crane for an old schoolhouse conversion project, including renovations to the roof and a partial loft extension. Over eight or nine weeks, the Hup M 28-22 will lift prefabricated wooden construction elements, pallets with roof tiles, and various building materials weighing between 200 and 2,200 kg.

“The project budget for a crane was only very small so it was essential to find one that could work efficiently and productively,” said Pascal Möckli, sales director for tower cranes at Stirnimann. “With simple transport, quick and easy set-up and a wide range of configuration options, the Hup M 28-22 is an efficient crane with a good cost-benefit ratio.”

The most compact transport dimensions in its class
The Hup M 28-22 provides hook heights from 19.6 m to 31.1 m when the jib is raised to 30°. It has a 2.2 t maximum capacity and can lift up to 850 kg from the end of the 28 m jib.

At just 11.6 m long and 3.6 m high, the Hup M 28-22 is the only self-erecting crane with 28 m jib in such a compact transport format. With permanently attached steel ballast, the crane comes complete as a single package to be transported as a trailer or semi-trailer. The TÜV-certified integrated transport axle allows it to travel up to 80 km/h on roads, while the maximum steering radius of +20°/-20° enables it to reach even the most constrained jobsites.

Smart Set-up for quick crane configuration
The Hup 28-22 offers 16 jib configurations and 2 footprint options, all of which are simple to set up via remote control by a single operator using the Smart Set-up interface.

“It has the fastest assembly time for short-term use. The customer has rented the crane with a long-term outlook, as the majority of these cranes have to cope with short assignments of just one or a few days. This type of crane is made for this,” Möckli said.

Partners in performance
Stirnimann has enjoyed loyal and successful cooperation with Manitowoc since 1986. The dealer will take full responsibility for the maintenance of the new Hup M 28-22 in direct cooperation and constant exchange with Manitowoc. Besides the Hup M 28-22, Stirnimann runs a fleet of 310 rental cranes (120 self-erecting cranes and 190 top-slewing tower cranes), ranging from the Igo 10 right up to the MD 560 B M25. The company also offers a further 132 rental cranes from its site in Truman, Austria.

“Schulthess Holzbau AG is a new customer and we would like to thank them for the trust they have placed in us and the new crane. I have full confidence the new Hup M 28-22 will be an enormous asset to their work,” Möckli concluded.
