German crane rental company SMS Autokrane strengthens fleet with a new Grove GMK4080L
- The customer received the new crane at the Manitowoc factory in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, and put it straight to work at the facility, installing new parts for an on-site printing press

SMS Autokrane from Michelstadt, Germany, has expanded its fleet with a new Grove GMK4080L, which it received at the Manitowoc plant in Wilhelmshaven this January. Following the official handover, the four-axle all-terrain crane was put straight to work at the factory, replacing components for the on-site printing presses which produce Grove brochures, operating manuals, and more.
The GMK4080L combines power with exceptional maneuverability, thanks to a maximum lift capacity of 80 t, a 60 m MEGAFORM® main boom, and a compact vehicle width of just 2.55 m. Together, these features offer a real advantage to owners on confined urban or industrial jobsites.
Power comes from a 300 kW Mercedes-Benz OM470LA engine, which ensures reliable performance on the road and during lifting. The crane is equipped with Manitowoc’s MAXbase™ system for asymmetric outrigger positioning, which increases lift capacity across various working setups and provides operators greater flexibility when space is limited.
During the handover, the SMS Autokrane team received a comprehensive, practical introduction to the crane’s features and technologies. This hands-on training ensured the customer could maximize the crane's benefits from day one and included details on the intuitive CCS control system, efficient setup routines, and the advantages of MAXbase™.

The GMK4080L is an outstanding four-axle taxi crane that, with its 60-meter-long boom, offers both the longest boom and the lowest gross vehicle weight in its class. Within 10 t per axle, the crane can carry 5.2 t counterweight and even 13.3 t counterweight with 12 t axle load.
