Four Grove cranes combine for precision container crane installation in London
- J&M Crane & Transport sent a mix of five- and six-axle Grove all-terrain cranes to handle the project.
- Careful planning and coordination ensured the 12-hour lift passed without a hitch.
Four Grove all-terrain cranes worked seamlessly to assemble a large container crane at a port in London. The cranes are all owned by UK-based J&M Crane & Transport, which provided full lift planning and engineering for the complex harborside installation.
The cranes selected for the project were: GMK6300L-1, GMK5250XL-1, GMK5250L and GMK5150L. Each was precisely configured for the lifting work, with boom lengths set between 27.7 m and 33.5 m, and counterweight, rigging, outrigger spread, and other details matched to the requirements of the lift. The engineered lift lasted 12 hours, capping a successful 6-week container crane installation for J&M Crane & Transport.
“This project was all about detail, delivery, and reliability. We selected the four Grove cranes for this lift because we knew they offered the strength and reassurance we needed. We used our in-house J&M CAD Blocks for lift planning and after many weeks of installation and set-up, it was fantastic to see the four cranes install the 199 t upperworks on the legs of the container crane,” said Ben Lawrence, sales director and CPCS Appointed Person at J&M Crane & Transport.
The GMK6300L-1 is a six-axle crane with a 300 t capacity and 80 m main boom. The other cranes on the project are all five-axle models with capacities of between 150 t and 250 t. J&M Crane & Transport purchased the cranes directly from Manitowoc UK’s office, which also provides full customer support including parts, service, training, and technical assistance from its facilities in Buckingham and Barnsley.
